Stretching Your Back

Like all other forms of exercise, you need to engage in regular stretching to reap lasting benefits. If you only stretch occasionally, you can’t fully experience the effects. Our chiropractor in Setauket recommends a daily stretching regimen, but you can still improve your flexibility if you stretch at least two times a week. Before trying any new exercises, be sure to consult with Dr. Argeropoulos. Here are some static back stretches recommended by our chiropractor:

  • Back Flexion Stretch – Start by lying flat on your back. Bring both knees into your chest and hug them. Gently flex your head towards the knees. Hold this position for ten seconds, then release. 
  • Sitting Flexion Stretch – Start in a chair or at the edge of a bed. Reach both of your hands down to touch the floor. Curl your spine into a ball as you reach down. Hold this position, then slowly roll back up. Repeat this stretch to ease back stiffness. 
  • Hip Stretch – Start flat on your back with your knees bent. Make sure your feet are flat on the floor. Rest your right ankle on the knee of your left leg. Clasp your hands under your left thigh or over your knee, and gently pull your thigh towards the chest. Hold the hip stretch for ten seconds and repeat on the other side. 

Incorporating regular stretching into your routine can help improve flexibility in the muscles that support your back. This can help prevent lower back pain when your spine is subjected to stress. Remember to breathe deeply, stretch slowly, and pay close attention to your muscles.
